St. Joseph’s Hospital is located in Huwei Township, Yunlin County, province of Taiwan in the Republic of China. Established by
Bishop Thomas Niu of the Chiayi diocese in 1955, it aims to provide complete medical services to the residents, especially the poor, of
Huwei and its neighboring towns. Bishop Niu had founded a hospital in Shandong Province, China, when he was a young priest and he
had seen a similar need in Yunlin County 60 years ago. He noticed that the people was lacking medical care facilities and to address this
need he invited two foreign missionaries, Fr. George Massin from Belgium and Fr. Anthony Pierrot from Netherlands, to establish St.
Joseph’s Hospital. These two young and energetic missionaries became the first administrators of the hospital.

“Total Sacrifice, Unconditional Love and Constant Joy” are the three principles St. Joseph’s Hospital is founded upon.
St. Joseph is the husband of the Blessed Virgin Mary and the earthly father of Jesus. He was a hardworking and joyful carpenter by profession, a
protector and a loving husband of Mary and father of Jesus by vocation.

Surgery, Obstetrics and Gynecology, Pediatrics, Intensive Care, and various subspecialties. The hospital is committed to constant
improvement as we develope characteristic differentiated rehabilitation therapy. In addition to services such as physical therapy,
occupational therapy, and speech therapy, she also endeavors to provide multi-disciplinary early intervention programs for children with
disabilities. Through multi-disciplinary collaboration in treatment modalities, these programs train children to develop their abilities for
interpersonal interaction and social adaptation.
The mission of St. Joseph’s Hospital is to offer quality medical care to patients. The entire outpatient treatment services cover a total of
18 clinical specialties and subspecialties including internal medicine, surgical and other clinical departments. On the average, the hospital
receives as many as 1,300 outpatients everyday. As the elderly population increases every year, the hospital foresees its role as a
guardian to the health of the local seniors in the community.
In addition, we also provides health education and disease management in diabetes, osteoporosis, smoking cessation, chronic kidney
disease, and Hepatitis B and C. The hospital is also a certified “mother-and-baby friendly hospital”. She has professional caregivers
providing correct concepts in health education.
Riding a bicycle, motorbike or driving a car is the primary means of transportation in Huwei and Yunlin County. The public
transportation is not very convenient especially to senior citizens who would wish to seek medical treatment. In order to address this
predicament, the hospital had mapped out several transportation shuttle routes particularly for those living in the rural areas. Moreover,
we offer to the public a friendly medical environment by providing personalized service through the reception desk.
The hospital systematically campaigns for better health directed to the staff, patients and their families, and community residents. We
have set up an interdepartmental work group for health promotion since 2007 and joined the service network of World Health
Organization Health Promoting Hospitals (WHO HPH). We continue to conduct health-promoting drives such as employee fitness,
healthy weight loss, weight loss plan for patients, and cessation of smoking or betel nut chewing habits.
